The Bowling Green State University hockey program has welcomed another coach into its family for the 2009-10 season. Doug Slipacoff will serve as a volunteer assistant coach and video coordinator for the Falcon hockey team.
Slipacoff will serve as an assistant to interim head coach Dennis Williams and be active in team drills with his expertise as a former defenseman for reigning Division III hockey champion Neumann College. He will also assume responsibility of all video operations and film analysis for Falcon hockey.
“I’m excited to be here,” Slipacoff said. “It’s a great opportunity to be with coach Williams and the staff that is in place. So far both Mike [Mankowksi] and Scott [Stirling] have been great and I look forward to working with them. I am really excited to start learning and start my next career as a coach. Bowling Green is a program with much tradition. It’s an honor to now be a part of it all.”
This is not the first go-around for Slipacoff and Williams. The two spent time together at Neumann College when Williams was the Knights’ head coach from 2003-06. Slipacoff played under Williams at Neumann for two seasons before Williams left the program.
Williams is excited to have one of his former players on his staff. “As a player, I truly admired him because he worked very hard and understood the game,” said Williams. “What I like about Doug is that he always speaks his mind. He’ll tell me straight up how things are. I respect and admire that about him.”
Slipacoff enters his first season as a coach, but comes off a season as a player achieving the highest of team accolades. In 2008-09, Slipacoff was a defenseman for the Division III National Champion Neumann Knights team. In that season, he played in 12 games and recorded two assists. During his tenure at Neumann College, Slipacoff played in 40 games, scored one goal and recorded five assists for a total of six career points.
He played his junior hockey in the Western Ontario Junior Hockey League (WOJHL) for three teams. Slipacoff spent time with the Petrolia Jets in 2002-03 and with the Chatham Maroons in 2003-04, winning league titles with each team. In his last season as a junior hockey player, he played for the Tecumseh Chiefs where he was second in the league in defensive scoring and voted to the first-team all-star team.
While here at BGSU, Slipacoff will be studying for a masters degree in business education.
