BGSU Hockey Adds Second Assistant Coach to the Program

by Ryan Gasser, Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant

Bowling Green interim hockey head coach Dennis Williams has announced today the addition of former Brown assistant hockey coach, Scott Stirling, to his staff.

Stirling comes to BGSU hockey after spending the 2008-09 season with his alma mater, Brown University, as an assistant coach under former head coach Roger Grillo. Despite a 5-23-5 season for the Bears, Stirling helped guide goalie Mike Clemente to a respectable season including a .930 save percentage and a 2.67 GAA mark with over 675 saves as a freshman.

“He (Stirling) is more knowledgeable than a goalie guy,” says Williams. “He knows the game. He knows the X’s and O’s too. I’m confident he can step in and gain the respect from our forwards and D.”

On becoming a Falcon, Stirling said, “What an opportunity to come to BG and be a part of the hockey program. There’s a storied tradition of hockey here and I am really thankful and excited for the opportunity to be on staff here.”

Williams went on about his new addition to the staff, “He is a very low-key type person. He is a thinker before he speaks and he has a real nice calm demeanor about him and can get his point across. As a staff we want to compliment each other and balance each other and I think he will help Mike (Mankowski) and I very well.”

Stirling made his name as a standout goaltender for the Brown Bears from 1997-2000, having his best seasons as a junior and senior. In both the 1999 and 2000 seasons, he was named second team All-Ivy as well as being a two-time Academic All-Ivy honoree. As a senior in 2000, he earned Academic All-ECAC honors and was named team MVP.

Stirling still ranks in Brown's all-time top 10 for several goaltending categories including goals against average in a season, season save percentage and shutouts in a season. For his career, Stirling ranks third all-time at Brown with 1,958 saves. His 3.08 GAA is sixth all-time, his .906 save percentage is fifth all-time, and his three career shutouts ranks third all-time.

Following his graduation from Brown with a degree in both economics and organizational behavior and management, Stirling began his professional hockey career with the Trenton Titans (ECHL). In his rookie season, Stirling played in 48 games and posted a 2.14 GAA, a .922 save percentage, and a 32-10-3 record, en route to ECHL Goalie of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and First Team All-ECHL honors, while leading Trenton to the Kelly Cup finals.

Over his eight-year professional career, Stirling also spent time with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies (ECHL), Worcester Ice Cats (AHL), Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL), Fresno Falcons (ECHL), San Antonio Rampage (AHL) and the Valerenga Ice Hockey Club (Norwegian Elite Hockey League).

He had his most successful season in the ECHL in 2004, earning ECHL MVP honors, Goalie of the Year, and First Team All-ECHL recognition, posting a 1.91 GAA and a .933 save percentage in 49 games (31-13-5) with Atlantic City.

A native of Hull, Mass., Scott is the son of Steve Stirling, the former New York Islanders head coach (2003-04 and 2005-06). Scott and his wife Heather have two daughters, Taylor (4) and Grace (2).
