Mike Mankowski Named Assistant Hockey Coach

by Jason Knavel, Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green interim hockey coach Dennis Williams has announced the hiring of Canisius College assistant coach Mike Mankowski to one of two assistant coach openings on the staff. Mankowski has extensive experience in Northwestern Ohio, coaching for the Toledo IceDiggers and Toledo Storm, as well as St. John’s Jesuit High School.

“Mike’s passion and knowledge for college hockey was very evident throughout the process,” Williams said. “His wealth of knowledge in recruiting and his style will add instant success when identifying student-athletes.”

Mankowski has been an assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator at Canisius since 2005. He also works extensively with USA Hockey, having served as a coach of Select 16-17 National Development Camps and a director/head coach of Mid-American Select 14-15 District Camps.

At Canisius, Mankowski’s recruiting classes were some of the best in Atlantic Hockey. His first class earned 12 weekly league honors, the most of any Division I team in the country, while his second class included the top two scorers in the conference. He had at least one player selected to Atlantic Hockey’s All-Rookie Team each season he was there.

Mankowski served as the general manager and head coach of the Toledo IceDiggers from 2001-05 and as a volunteer assistant coach and scout of the Toledo Storm from 2000-03. That came on the heels of a ten-year stint as head coach at St. John’s Jesuit High School in Toledo.

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to be a part of BGSU hockey,” Mankowski said. “My family and I are grateful that Coach Williams has given us the opportunity to move back close to home and to be a part of the Bowling Green community.”

A 1990 Toledo graduate, Mankowski is married to Colleen and the couple has three children – Jocelyn, Reid, and Drew.
